The Cake And The Rain: A Memoir

Now, in his first memoir, Webb delivers a snapshot of his life from 1955 to 1970, from simple and sere Oklahoma to fast and fantastical Los Angeles, from the crucible of his family to the top of his longed-for profession.

From Scratch is based on the New York Times best-selling memoir by Tembi Locke. The Zoe Saldana vehicle has flaws, but this romantic dramedy hits all the sweet spots life offers. It is a funny, romantic, happy, fearful, angry, surprising, and tragic series, just like life itself.

The Cake and the Rain: A Memoir

But I'm anxious to see family again. My dad is going in for a bunch of tests. My sister is getting her knee operated on. Peter's sister, Shelley, will be having a procedure done on her back. All of these things are important -- if not particularly fun. So the plan yesterday was to do something festive, and I couldn't think of anything more festive than cake.

We ordered a chocolate layer cake with buttercream frosting. It had fresh fruit between the layers and a smiling sun face on the top. A woman at the market squeezed about 50 lemons for me, and we made fresh lemonade. Then Jorge and his employees and the three artists he keeps busy every day all gathered together in the courtyard with the 2,000-plus suns to eat cake.

Once we were all gathered, I found myself completely without Spanish words to thank them properly. This is what happens to me when I have something important to say in Spanish -- I forget every word I ever knew. So, instead, we cut the cake and poured lemonade and smiled a lot. I think they all got the message.

In her 2013 memoir Unsinkable, Reynolds looked back on her life and career. She recalled her determination to prove to her costar and film director Gene Kelly that she could handle the involved dance numbers.

In this intimate, harrowing, and often hilarious memoir, Rain talks about her divided heritage, and about the forces that shaped her wildly schizophrenic childhood. In her father's house, she bonded with Richard's grandmother, Mamma, a one-time whorehouse madam who never tired of reminding Rain that she was black. In her mother's house, and in the home of her Jewish grandparents, Rain was a "mocha-colored Jewish princess," learning how to cook everything from kugel to beef brisket.

Sharing, preparing, eating and talking food is a Jamaican obsession that reaches a fever pitch at Easter and Christmastime. As I sat there so far from home, I knew family and friends in Jamaica would still be stopping by my parents' house there to catch up over and share seasonal rum-laced sorrel and fruitcake around the dining table. And I realized that the table now in my parents' home could easily have come from this Ethan Mien collection. But my reminiscences never happen around it. They are always around an irrepressible blue and silver rectangle that witnessed and defined my family's life for twenty years.

Bright beautiful day but rather cold. It seems we never get any real moisture. Tonight I ate pancakes with the boy scouts. It seems the whole town is patronizing them. It was fun seeing them hustling around serving. 2ff7e9595c
